Welcome to PushPast10. I am Dr. Simone Mathieu and I am originally from the beautiful nature island of the Caribbean, Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic).
As with many of the other islands of the Caribbean, some of our first inhabitants of Dominica were the Kalinago Indian people who enjoyed an abundant life on the island. And as is the history of the other Caribbean islands, we were later colonized by the Europeans who eventually introduced the slave trade to the islands.
What is unique about my island home Dominica though, is that we are one of the few islands in the Caribbean where the indigenous Kalinago Indians still survive today. So as you can see, we come from a rich multi ethnicity background of Kalinago Indians, and our African ancestors; People who were stripped of their identities, and forcibly displaced from their homes and their cultures.
Yet despite what seemed like insurmountable challenges, like the beautiful, majestic mountains of Dominica, we rose above our challenges to fuse significant elements of our Kalinago, African, and European cultures to create an incredibly, rich, vibrant, and undeniably beautiful creole culture, which we continue to celebrate today.
The mission of PushPast10 is to not only recognize and celebrate this vibrant culture, but just as importantly, to recognize the power of Our Identity is Our Strength. This theme which permeates all that we do, extends far beyond Dominica and the Caribbean.
This is because whoever you are today is the result of those who, whether by choice or force, migrated from where your ancestors originated from to where you currently live. Our identify is Our Strength is a recognition and a celebration that the challenges that our ancestors faced, and the challenges we faced in the past, have prepared us to not only take on the challenges we face today, but to excel beyond the hopes and the dreams of those who came before Us.
We recognize and celebrate that Our Identity is Our Strength by embracing the power of media. With the information first published in my book ‘PushPast10’ in 2020; where I describe how I tapped into my inner strength to achieve my first major goal.
The concept of Our identify is our Strength quickly took off, and has now led to the creation of two radio programs: Untapped Potential (UP!) on TDNradio.net and Roots Connections of Q95 Radio, q95da.com. In addition, we are proud to report a monthly audience of over 13,500 on various social media platforms.
With the ability to reach a worldwide audience, the movement continues to gain steam with a number of projects and collaborations currently in the works
We hope that you to will join our movement of recognizing that Our Identity is Our Strength, as we tap in to the skills and expertise of our Caribbean brothers and sisters at home and abroad, to celebrate our culture, and to harness the power of collaboration to move our people and our Caribbean region forward. I see this as the first step in reversing the brain drain which has plagued our region for decades.
Please take a look around our website for more information on how we continue to celebrate our Caribbean culture, and our people, and how we are collaborating in various ways to move our people and our region forward in this ever changing world.
Thank you for stopping by and don't forget to follow us and subscribe on the social media platforms listed below!
